Home Safety Room by Room

Most home hazards are easy to fix once you know where to look. This is a practical, room-by-room walkthrough - plan for about an hour to go through the whole house.

Entryways & stairs

Sturdy handrails on both sides of any staircase, non-slip treads, and bright lighting at the top and bottom. Outside, make sure walkways are even and well-lit, and repair any cracked steps.

Kitchen & living areas

Move frequently used items to waist-to-shoulder height so no step stool is needed. Secure or remove loose rugs, and keep cords and clutter out of walking paths. A stable chair with armrests makes sitting and standing safer than a soft couch.

Bathroom

The highest-risk room in the house. Grab bars near the toilet and inside the shower or tub, a non-slip mat, and a shower chair if standing for long periods is difficult all meaningfully reduce risk.

Bedroom

A clear, well-lit path to the bathroom, a nightlight, and a phone or call button within arm's reach of the bed all matter most during the highest-risk hours — the middle of the night.
